A polysomnograph or PSG, also referred to as an all-night sleep study, is the "Gold Standard" comprehensive test used to determine the quality and quantity of sleep to help physicians in the diagnosis of various sleep disorders - including Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Polysomnography records your brain waves, the oxygen level in your blood, heart rate and breathing, as well as eye and leg movements during the study.
Polysomnography may be done at a sleep disorders unit within a hospital or at a sleep center. While it's typically performed at night, polysomnography is occasionally done during the day to accommodate shift workers who habitually sleep during the day.
Once the results have been studied by a board certified "sleep physician", they will review the test results, discuss how any comorbidities (existing health problems) are often related to sleep-breathing disorders, and make the appropriate recommendations for the best choice of therapy. Treatment choices may involve weight loss, better sleep hygiene - including positional changes, Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD), CPAP or similar machine, Inspire (an implanted electronic stimulator), and even various surgeries.
